Water main break floods streets in Nova Iguaçu

A water main break from Cedae caused flooding and home destruction in the Km 32 neighborhood of Nova Iguaçu, in Baixada Fluminense, on Thursday (5). The incident left families displaced and disrupted water supply in several areas. Repair teams are working to restore service.

The leak happened in a pipeline inside the Guandu Water Treatment Station (ETA), operated by Cedae, reducing the system's water treatment to 50% capacity in the early afternoon. This network supplies municipalities such as Belford Roxo, Duque de Caxias, Mesquita, Nova Iguaçu, Nilópolis, Queimados, and São João de Meriti in Baixada Fluminense, where supply was halted. In the capital, distribution is reduced, with potential intermittences in some areas.

Rio+Saneamento reported that supply is paralyzed in 24 neighborhoods in Rio's west zone on Thursday. Regularization will be gradual after repairs, expected by Friday morning (6), with up to 72 hours for full normalization, varying by location, especially in elevated areas.

Cedae stated that technicians are performing emergency repairs, and supply recovery may take 72 hours or more after full production restoration. Águas do Rio advised residents to reserve water in tanks for essential uses and postpone high-consumption tasks, providing support via 0800 195 0 195.

In Nova Iguaçu City Hall, Civil Defense inspected affected properties: 18 homes were hit, 10 occupied and 8 unoccupied, impacting eight families (30 people), with two families (nine people) displaced. Also affected were 11 businesses, a church, and six commercial rooms on Jasmins Street and Rio-São Paulo Road. The Social Assistance Secretariat is assessing families and providing shelter, plus cleaning kits for properties.
