West Bengal Chief Minister vows to bring Uniform Civil Code and anti-Love Jihad laws

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said on Friday that the government will introduce strict laws against Love Jihad and table the Uniform Civil Code bill in the assembly on Monday.

Adhikari made the remarks while addressing an event in Kolkata marking the 189th birth anniversary of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. He stated that a committee headed by a sitting judge would be formed to implement the UCC following the procedure used in states such as Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Assam.

The Chief Minister also promised tough measures against Love Jihad, land jihad and forceful religious conversion. He noted that the BJP had pledged in its 2026 election manifesto to enact the UCC within six months of taking office.

Trinamool Congress criticised the move and said reform must come through dialogue rather than political polarisation. Adivasi communities have expressed concern, with sources indicating that tribal groups may be excluded from the proposed code.
