WHO: Over 200.000 er døde som følge af hede i Europa siden 2022

Verdenssundhedsorganisationen (WHO) oplyser, at mere end 200.000 mennesker i Europa er døde af ekstrem varme siden 2022. Størstedelen af dødsfaldene kunne ifølge WHO's regionale direktør for Europa være undgået.

WHO oplyser, at ekstrem varme især rammer ældre, børn og personer med hjerte- eller nyresygdomme. Forholdene fører til dehydrering, hedeslag og forværring af eksisterende sygdomme.

Hans Kluge, der er WHO's regionsdirektør for Europa, udtaler, at de fleste dødsfald var fuldstændig forebyggelige. Han beskriver konsekvenserne af klimaforandringer som en klar og overhængende trussel, hvor ekstrem varme er det mest umiddelbare og dødelige udtryk.

I slutningen af maj blev store dele af Vesteuropa ramt af en hedebølge. Spanske myndigheder rapporterede i sidste uge det højeste antal varmerelaterede dødsfald for maj måned siden 2015.
