Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi of the United Arab Emirates, in Beijing on Tuesday.

During the meeting, Xi put forward a four-point proposal to promote peace and stability in the Middle East.

He called for adherence to peaceful coexistence by building a common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security architecture for the Middle East and Gulf region.

Xi urged respect for national sovereignty, ensuring the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of countries in the region, and safeguarding the safety of personnel, facilities and institutions.

On international rule of law, he said its authority must be upheld to prevent a return to the law of the jungle. “The authority of the international rule of law should be upheld and cannot be used when convenient and discarded when not,” Xi said, according to state news agency Xinhua.

The proposal also emphasizes coordinating development and security to create a favorable environment for regional countries. “Security is the prerequisite for development, and development is the guarantee of security,” Xi said. “China is willing to share the opportunities of Chinese modernisation to strengthen the foundations of regional development and stability.”

Analysts cited by the South China Morning Post said the crown prince's trip signals the UAE seeking more reliable partners amid the US-Israeli war on Iran.
