Yeraldine Bonilla accuses Sedena of naming Gerardo Mérida as security secretary

Sinaloa’s interim governor Yeraldine Bonilla stated that the National Defense Secretariat appointed Gerardo Mérida as state security secretary, not license governor Rubén Rocha Moya.

Bonilla explained that the appointment of Mérida, a retired general accused of ties to organized crime, was made solely by Sedena. The official noted that the former secretary “has no relation with the Government” and that the situation does not affect the state.

Mérida resigned from the post in December 2024 amid clashes between factions of the Sinaloa Cartel. Bonilla clarified that she has had no further communication with Rocha Moya after Mérida turned himself in to United States authorities.

The governor also denied having information about new United States accusations against Mexican officials.
