California man scheduled for trial in fatal shooting

Samuel Magdaleno faces first-degree murder charges in the death of Adrian Anthony Montiel in Bakersfield last year. Authorities say the shooting stemmed from Magdaleno's belief that Montiel was romantically involved with his girlfriend.

On August 15, 2025, Magdaleno argued with Montiel and a neighbor on Edison Highway. Court records show he threatened to shoot Montiel if suspicions about his girlfriend proved true.

About two hours later, Montiel was shot with a rifle. He died the next day at a local hospital.

Magdaleno was arrested in October 2025 and pleaded not guilty. On Thursday his trial was scheduled for September 14.
