China’s Tianwen-2 probe reaches quasi-moon asteroid Kamo’oalewa

The China National Space Administration’s Tianwen-2 probe has successfully rendezvoused with the asteroid Kamo’oalewa. The spacecraft sent back the first pictures of the near-Earth object. Officials now plan to land on the surface and collect samples for return to Earth.

The Tianwen-2 mission reached the asteroid on a path that closely matches Earth’s orbit around the Sun. Kamo’oalewa is described as a quasi-moon due to its stable trajectory relative to our planet.

The probe transmitted initial images after arrival, confirming its position near the target. The China National Space Administration stated that the spacecraft achieved the milestone as part of its asteroid exploration goals.

Next steps include a surface landing and sample collection. Material gathered from Kamo’oalewa will be sent back to Earth for scientific analysis.
