Fedora Asahi Remix 43 released with Mac Pro support

Fedora Asahi Remix 43, based on Fedora 43, introduces support for Mac Pro and functional microphones on M2 Pro and M2 Max MacBooks. The release features Linux kernel 6.17, KDE Plasma 6.6, and a GNOME 49 variant, along with RPM 6.0 and the DNF5 backend ahead of mainline Fedora. Hardware improvements include 120Hz refresh rates on certain MacBook Pro models.

Fedora Asahi Remix, a collaboration between the Fedora Asahi SIG and the Asahi Linux project, brings Fedora Linux to Apple Silicon Macs. The latest version, Fedora Asahi Remix 43, builds on Fedora 43 and incorporates Linux kernel 6.17. It offers two desktop options: KDE Plasma 6.6 and GNOME 49 for the GNOME variant. KDE Plasma 6.6 includes OCR support in the Spectacle screenshot tool, a new Plasma Keyboard on-screen keyboard, a grayscale filter in Color Blindness Correction options, and Plasma Setup, a first-run wizard for user account creation. GNOME 49 adds new default apps, shell upgrades, and file manager improvements. Both variants use RPM 6.0, which provides security enhancements such as full fingerprint-based OpenPGP key identification, multiple signatures per package, and OpenPGP v6 support with post-quantum cryptography. A key upgrade is the DNF5 backend, now powering Plasma Discover and GNOME Software, a change not yet available in mainline Fedora but expected in Fedora 44. On the hardware front, the release adds support for Mac Pro devices. Users of M2 Pro and M2 Max MacBooks gain working microphones, and MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch models support 120Hz refresh rates. Installation requires Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 13.5 or 14.2, achievable via a single command for new installs. Existing KDE Plasma users should follow the upgrade guide, while GNOME users can use DNF.
