Florida man gets 45 years for bicyclist killing

Savonne Morrison was sentenced to 45 years in prison for the manslaughter of Jeffrey Chapman, a 49-year-old bicyclist beaten to death in Clearwater, Florida. The 21-year-old was on probation for a prior violent offense at the time of the attack.

Morrison received 15 years for the manslaughter conviction and an additional 30 years for violating probation from an earlier carjacking case. A jury convicted him earlier this year after he and Jermaine Bennett chased down Chapman on Oct. 20, 2022, and struck him repeatedly with a tire iron.

Chapman's daughter, Sierra Chapman, told the court that her father was murdered for sport. She noted that Morrison had already been given probation for a violent felony and questioned what a third chance would produce.

Bennett was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. Text messages between the two men showed a lack of remorse after the attack, including references to themselves as legends.
