Idaho woman charged after shooting man who dared her during argument

Diane Wetherbee, 65, faces felony charges in Idaho after allegedly shooting a man in the leg with a .380 pistol he handed her during an argument while drinking. She then went to bed and fell asleep, according to court documents. Deputies arrested her after finding her sleeping at the scene.

On Saturday night in Challis, Idaho, Diane Wetherbee, 65, and a man were drinking at a home when they began arguing, according to court documents cited by Law&Crime and East Idaho News. The man reportedly handed Wetherbee a .380 pistol and told her to shoot him. She allegedly fired, striking him in the leg. Afterward, Wetherbee went to an upstairs bedroom and fell asleep. Another person at the home heard a single gunshot but did not witness the incident. Deputies responded to the residence around 11:23 p.m. and found Wetherbee sleeping. They took her into custody, and the pistol was located on the bedroom floor amid blood puddles. A search revealed additional blood and a pair of bloody boots near the back door. Wetherbee confessed to the shooting while en route to Custer County Jail, where she was booked. She has been charged with felony aggravated battery using a deadly weapon and is held on a $25,000 bond. A no-contact order requires her to stay away from the victim. Wetherbee is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on March 30 and faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
