The mayor’s office said the 1,000 discounted tickets will be distributed to New York City residents through a lottery.
In a statement and a public event in Harlem, Mamdani framed the initiative as a small but symbolic affordability measure amid widespread concern about the cost of attending World Cup matches. The city’s announcement said the $50 tickets include free round-trip bus transportation to MetLife Stadium, the New Jersey venue that will host several World Cup games.
Reports on the announcement noted that World Cup ticket prices can run into the hundreds—or, for high-demand matches on the resale market, far more—though the limited $50 allocation applies only to the 1,000 tickets set aside for city residents.
