Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin temporarily halted Immigration and Customs Enforcement traffic stops following two fatal shootings of migrants by officers in Houston and Biddeford, Maine.
Mullin declined to confirm whether he briefed President Donald Trump before issuing the pause during a Friday briefing.
Trump posted on Truth Social the day after the pause, opposing the move and calling traffic stops a key crime-fighting tool. He urged ICE to resume the practice judiciously.
White House border czar Tom Homan described the pause as temporary. Officers received orders to resume stops on Thursday with added requirements, including body cameras for at least one agent per team.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said all body cameras will be distributed within the next 60 days.
