Oregon man gets 20-year sentence for shooting newlywed wife

Talon Gabriel Mitchell, 19 at the time, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for fatally shooting his wife of a few weeks in their Beaverton apartment in 2023. He pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter with a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon. Mitchell claimed he was stuck in a dream after taking LSD.

Washington County Circuit Judge Theodore Sims sentenced Talon Gabriel Mitchell last week to 20 years in a state correctional facility for the February 23, 2023, killing of Oulaykham Mona Chopheng. The couple had been married only a few weeks when the incident occurred at their apartment in the 1000 block of Southwest 160th Avenue in Beaverton, about 10 miles southwest of Portland, Oregon. Mitchell must serve the first 10 years without reduction but may earn time off for good behavior on the remainder. He had pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter with a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon, avoiding a trial scheduled for March 31, 2026. Around 10:15 p.m., neighbors called 911 after hearing a woman crying and screaming for help, followed by a man speaking in short sentences. Police found Chopheng dead on the couch from a gunshot wound to the face. Mitchell, with blood on his shoes, was arrested at the scene. He had texted 911 bizarre messages, including: > HELP, IM STUCK IN A DREAM > I'm being controlled > Help me > Insanity Mitchell told investigators he ingested LSD that morning and blacked out. He later claimed he awoke by the front door, saw his wife's body, and thought it was a dream or zombie apocalypse.
