The San Diego Padres are evaluating right-hander Griffin Canning for his season debut on Sunday against the White Sox. Canning has completed five rehab starts with Triple-A El Paso following a left Achilles tear. Manager Craig Stammen hinted at the possibility without confirming the starter.
SAN DIEGO -- Griffin Canning, who signed a one-year deal with the Padres in February, is nearing the end of his rehabilitation from a left Achilles injury suffered last season with the Mets. In his most recent rehab outing with Triple-A El Paso, he pitched five innings, allowing one run on 68 pitches. Prior to the injury in mid-June, Canning had posted a 3.77 ERA over 16 starts with New York, marking the best stretch of his career midway through the season.
