Padres manager and coach ejected in first inning

San Diego Padres manager Craig Stammen and infield coach Ryan Goins were ejected in the first inning of Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.

The ejections stemmed from a disputed check-swing call on an 0-1 pitch from Dodgers starter Emmet Sheehan to Fernando Tatis Jr. The Padres dugout voiced objections to first-base umpire Ben May. Plate umpire Nick Mahrley then ejected Goins after calling a ball on the next pitch, prompting Stammen to argue and receive his own ejection.

This marked Stammen’s third career ejection as a manager. The incident occurred as the Padres dealt with their longest losing streak since 2013, which had reached eight games after Saturday’s loss.

Stammen had previously emphasized a positive outlook, stating after the Saturday defeat that the team must continue showing up and that the current stretch does not define the season.
