Stranger attacks Portland mother holding baby while husband works outside

Judson Defir, 43, allegedly entered a Portland mother's home uninvited, said 'honey, I'm here' and attacked her as she held her 10-month-old baby and played with her 3-year-old, police say. Her husband was doing yard work outside at the time. Officers arrested Defir nearby after he fled the South Tabor neighborhood residence.

The incident unfolded on Sunday in Portland's South Tabor neighborhood. The mother was upstairs in a bedroom holding her 10-month-old and interacting with her 3-year-old when she heard the front door open and footsteps on the stairs. Mistaking them for her husband, she was startled by an unfamiliar male voice saying, 'Honey, I'm here.' She described the intruder, later identified as Judson Defir, 43, as having messy hair, beard and teeth, wearing a black hoodie and dark pants, and smelling of unwashed body odor, according to the arrest affidavit obtained by Law&Crime. Defir allegedly grabbed the woman while she held the baby, pulled her across the hallway into the guest bedroom, and forced her face-down onto the bed by pressing on her back and hips in an attempt to sexually assault her. The pressure risked injuring the baby, so she asked to place the infant in a crib; Defir allowed it. She then returned to the room with her 3-year-old, barricaded the door with a bookshelf, and yelled for help from the balcony, alerting her husband outside doing yard work. Her husband and people from a nearby church responded, but Defir had fled. Police arrived to find the mother 'sobbing uncontrollably' and stating he 'tried to rape her.' Officers located Defir nearby, pursued by about 15 people pointing and shouting at him. While in custody, he allegedly told a female officer, 'Wanna f—? You're hot.' Police noted Defir had attacked at least three other women that day: inappropriately touching one in the nearby church and grabbing two others walking in the neighborhood. In interviews, Defir claimed he had smoked meth that morning, attended church for pancakes, then entered the house where the woman screamed and dropped a baby as he 'accidentally bumped' her. Defir was arraigned Monday on charges of first-degree attempted rape, kidnapping, burglary, and a probation violation from an indecent exposure case. He had prior arrests in 2024 for screaming at girls in a park and lying naked intoxicated in a driveway. He was ordered held without bail, with a detention hearing set for Wednesday.
