The United States and Iran have signed a memorandum of understanding to extend the ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump described the agreement as a success during the G7 summit in France.
The deal follows two months of coordinated U.S. and Israeli military action against Iran and Hezbollah. It includes lifting some sanctions on Iran and releasing frozen Iranian assets.
Under the agreement, Iran is required to state it will not develop nuclear weapons and to hold further talks on the issue. In return, the U.S. will provide funds to rebuild infrastructure damaged in recent fighting.
Some Republican lawmakers have criticized the terms. They argue the deal provides billions of dollars to Iran with limited concessions and formalizes Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz.
Vice President JD Vance defended the agreement in an interview, asking critics for alternative proposals and noting Israel's population size limits military options.
