US undersecretary of state Jacob Helberg said brief curbs on foreign access to Anthropic’s Fable and Mythos models aim to protect critical infrastructure. He spoke in an exclusive interview published on July 16.
Jacob Helberg leads the Pax Silica initiative, which includes 22 nations and the European Union as signatories. The initiative focuses on safe release of advanced AI technology.
“We do not want cyberattacks on our critical infrastructure or the critical infrastructure of our allies,” Helberg told the South China Morning Post. He added that officials assessed how to release models safely for infrastructure and the financial sector.
The comments come amid ongoing US-China competition in artificial intelligence. Helberg noted the administration’s approach seeks both security and continued US leadership.
