X is rolling out a change to its algorithm that boosts the visibility of replies from mutual follows. The update aims to make comment sections feel less like a battleground. Nikita Bier, the platform's head of product, announced the tweak on July 13.
The small adjustment ensures that posts and replies from people users follow back appear more prominently in their replies sections. Bier noted that the algorithm previously lacked the data to highlight friends' responses, resulting in interactions dominated by unfamiliar users.
Bier explained that the change could help users discover common interests more easily. The company hopes the update will foster less toxic exchanges and more meaningful conversations on the platform.
X previously operated a Communities feature for interest-based interactions but discontinued it in April after it saw minimal adoption and high rates of spam and scams.
