A 42-year-old triathlete died Friday in a bike collision near Bouyon while attempting the canceled Ironman Nice course due to extreme heat.
On Friday, a prefectural decree canceled the Ironman Nice scheduled for Sunday due to extreme heat. Despite the ban and roads remaining open, many participants attempted the course anyway.
According to Le Parisien, the victim was cycling in the commune of Bouyon when he collided with a motorcyclist on a bend. The motorcyclist was unharmed. Emergency services arrived shortly before noon.
The Alpes-Maritimes prefecture had warned athletes of the risks and stated that any violation would result in fines. Nice Matin reports that thousands of people still completed the course in an almost family-like atmosphere.
