Two people died on Sunday on the beaches of Lacanau and Lège-Cap-Ferret after being swept away by baïne currents. The prefecture renewed its calls for vigilance against this dangerous phenomenon.
The victims are a 56-year-old German woman and a man in his sixties. The latter’s wife was rescued, said the mayor of Lacanau.
Since Friday, 31 people have been swept away by these currents on the Gironde coast. Rescue services intervened several times.
The region is experiencing an early heat wave with temperatures exceeding 30°C. The prefectures of Gironde, Landes and Pyrénées-Atlantiques had issued a baïne alert on Wednesday.
The prefecture asked town halls and rescue services to strengthen prevention actions as most beaches are not yet supervised.
