Afa announces new title for rosario central amid controversy

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) created a new tournament to recognize the team first in the Annual Table, awarding it immediately to Rosario Central for the 2025 season. However, Estudiantes de La Plata denied any vote took place in the Professional League's Executive Committee. The controversy escalated with responses from officials and President Javier Milei's support for Estudiantes' stance.

On Thursday, during a Professional League Executive Committee meeting attended by Claudio 'Chiqui' Tapia and Francisco Duarte, approval was given for a new title for the team finishing first in the Annual Table, adding to 2026 season trophies like Apertura, Clausura, and Copa de Campeones. For 2025, Rosario Central, which tallied 66 points with 18 wins, 12 draws, and only 2 losses, was named immediate champion. The club's president, Gonzalo Belloso, celebrated: “It's a plan that's been in the works for years... Super deserved for a club like ours that was first from the first matchday to the last”.

However, Estudiantes de La Plata contradicted the AFA's official version, which claimed unanimous approval by the 26 attending clubs, including the 'Pincha'. In a statement, the La Plata club clarified: “In the Executive Committee meeting... no vote was held regarding the recognition of the 2025 League Champion title”. Pablo Toviggino, AFA treasurer, responded harshly on social media: “Sir Sir Sir!!... Chest cold!! I forgot, Yes it was Voted, unanimously with your Club present via its VP”.

Ángel Di María, Central's captain, celebrated despite the criticism: “Glory has no price. 2025 league champion. Let's go Central”. Vélez coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto questioned the title's purpose, suggesting it might serve as future recognition. President Javier Milei intervened by reposting in support of Estudiantes president Juan Sebastián Verón, amplifying the debate dividing Argentine football.
