Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala said he will apologise in person to Spain's Dani Olmo after a post-match clash in the World Cup final. Ayala denied throwing a punch and described the incident as a push during the scuffle that followed Argentina's 1-0 defeat to Spain.
The confrontation occurred at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey after Sunday's final. Ayala was involved in efforts to separate players amid several incidents, including Leandro Paredes grabbing Eric Garcia by the throat.
Speaking to Valencia Capital Radio on Tuesday, Ayala said his intention was only to separate the players. He added that the contact with Olmo was "more of a push than anything else" and not a punch.
Ayala also defended Argentina's decision to turn their backs during the trophy presentation. He said the team chose to thank supporters instead, noting most fans were seated at one end of the stadium.
The 53-year-old former defender said he takes full responsibility for his actions and will seek out Olmo to apologise directly.
