Rescue teams in Ulsan recovered the body of the last missing worker from a collapsed boiler tower at a thermal power plant on November 14. The accident on November 6 trapped seven workers, with the bodies of the other six already retrieved. This concludes the search following the tragic demolition mishap after 40 years of use.
On November 6, a 63-meter Tower 5 at a thermal power plant in Ulsan, operated by state-run Korea East-West Power Co., collapsed during demolition. The tower had been in use for 40 years until 2021. The incident trapped seven workers, and authorities had already recovered the bodies of six.
To facilitate the search and eliminate risks, two flanking towers were blown up on Tuesday, November 12. On November 14, firefighting authorities located the last missing person and began cutting through metal structures to reach the area. The body was recovered shortly after, concluding the operation for all seven victims.
The accident has prompted discussions on safety protocols in demolition projects, with Korea East-West Power Co. investigating the cause. Officials emphasized cautious measures to minimize further hazards during the rescue.
