Bavarian Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer has called for agriculture to be included in national security exercises. He emphasized food production as critical infrastructure. In an interview, he warned of the consequences of a failure in primary production.
Alois Rainer, the Bavarian State Minister for Agriculture and Forestry from the CSU, highlighted in an interview with 'Bild am Sonntag' the need to consider agriculture in crisis scenarios and security exercises. He argued that food production represents essential critical infrastructure that must be protected.
Rainer referred to Bundeswehr exercises, such as scenarios involving an attack on the Berlin subway, and cautioned: «But we must not forget one thing: If primary production, agriculture, no longer functions, if we no longer have sufficient feed, if water for the animals is no longer available, then we would have a bigger problem.» He concluded: «Our nutrition would collapse. Therefore, agriculture must definitely be considered in security exercises.»
The minister stressed that a failure in agriculture would have broader impacts than isolated infrastructure incidents. His statements address civil protection and aim at better integration of the agricultural sector into national security planning. The call comes amid ongoing debates on resilience in supply chains.
