Chris Hoke compares Bill Cowher and Mike Tomlin coaching styles

Former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Chris Hoke discussed the similarities and differences between coaches Bill Cowher and Mike Tomlin on Arthur Moats' YouTube channel. Hoke highlighted their shared winning mentality while noting distinct approaches to practice intensity. The Steelers currently stand at 6-6 amid a challenging season.

Chris Hoke, who played for both Bill Cowher and Mike Tomlin during his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers, recently shared insights into the two coaches' styles. Speaking on Arthur Moats' YouTube channel, Hoke emphasized their common ground as effective leaders. "Both winners," Hoke said. "The similarity is they both know how to win. They both know how to motivate players."

However, their methods differed significantly. Cowher's practices were marked by high intensity and physicality. "Bill Cowher was super intense. Practices were very, very physical. We would go out there and bang," Hoke recalled. Even late in the season, the team wore full pads for initial run periods before switching to lighter gear.

In contrast, Tomlin adopted a less physical approach influenced by Tony Dungy. "It’s not as physical, but it’s more about mental reps. More about getting out there and going through your plays," Hoke explained. This shift reflects broader NFL changes prioritizing player safety, though Tomlin's sessions are still noted for physicality.

Both coaches achieved success with the Steelers. Each led the team to two Super Bowls, winning one—Cowher's first coming before Hoke joined the roster. The Steelers have not won a playoff game since 2016 and face the prospect of their first losing season since 2003 at 6-6. Last season ended poorly with five straight losses, including a playoff blowout.

Despite recent struggles, Tomlin's job appears secure. The organization values patience, as seen with Cowher's 15-year tenure, which included three consecutive playoff misses. Hoke's reflections underscore the coaches' enduring impact amid the team's efforts to rebound.
