Clara Brugada launches violence-free route in CDMX transport

Mexico City Government Head Clara Brugada unveiled the Ruta Libre de Violencia contra las Mujeres program, featuring panic buttons in public transport units. The initiative aims to enhance safety for female passengers through 15 specific measures. The launch took place on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

On November 28, 2025, at the Centro de Transferencia Modal (Cetram) Chapultepec, Clara Brugada, Head of Mexico City Government, launched the Ruta Libre de Violencia contra las Mujeres program. This strategy, involving leaders from 31 concessionaire corridors, consists of 15 actions to combat violence in public transport.

Key measures include installing panic buttons in concessionaire transport units, which will send immediate alerts to the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) for rapid response to crimes like harassment. Units will also feature visible stickers with emergency numbers, such as the SOS line, and each vehicle's identification number to facilitate reports.

Brugada stressed: “Each concessionaire transport system will have a mechanism to act against violence towards women.” She added: “It is not normal for a woman to board transport fearing harassment or abuse [...]. None of that is normal; it is all violence.” She urged concessionaires, operators, ticket collectors, and dispatchers to be allies to women, promoting that “we stop fearing to report our aggressors.”

Other actions include the permanent dissemination of the 'Si te tocan, nos toca' campaign, an immediate action protocol, training in gender and masculinities for staff, integral attention modules against violence in some Cetram, and creating Mujeres Libres y Seguras paths to these centers. It will promote a zero-tolerance culture, safe environments, proper lighting and cleaning in units, and greater participation of female drivers.

Mobility Secretary Héctor Ulises García Nieto emphasized: “This is about addressing an urgent and just cause: Ensuring all women and girls in Mexico City can travel safely, free from violence, and with full respect for their rights.” Brugada announced monthly reviews to assess progress and is preparing an additional package of mobility actions.

While specific units and the exact start of button installation were not detailed, the program aims to reduce harassment cases and encourage safe reporting.
