The race for Daegu mayor has tightened in the final stretch before the June 3 local elections, with conservative candidate Choo Kyung-ho closing in on Democratic Party rival Kim Boo-kyum after former President Park Geun-hye joined his campaign.
A survey of 800 Daegu citizens conducted from May 16 to 20 showed Kim Boo-kyum at 40 percent support and Choo Kyung-ho at 39 percent. The gap had narrowed from 7 percentage points in late April.
Choo has emphasized his record as deputy prime minister and finance minister, arguing that he will revive Daegu’s economy with conservative competence.
Former President Park Geun-hye appeared with Choo at Chilseong Market on Saturday, her first campaign event since her 2017 impeachment. She said she wanted to offer comfort amid economic difficulties.
Kim responded that focusing only on conservative unity would not address the city’s economic challenges.
