Dead by Daylight introduced its first Indigenous character earlier this week. The new survivor, Shane Wiigwaas, can be customized with Anishinaabe powwow regalia. The launch reflects a wider trend of cultural outfits in video games.
The asymmetrical horror game added Shane Wiigwaas as its first Indigenous character. Players can dress him in traditional items including a beaded vest, floral-embroidered breechcloth, feathered headpiece and buckskin moccasins.
The design team consulted an Anishinaabe expert to ensure historical accuracy. Associate art director Sarah Robinson said the goal was to represent the outfits authentically without copying existing work.
Other titles are following similar approaches. The Sims 4 recently released a West African collection, while Where Winds Meet offers Chinese hanfu and qipao styles. A Geena Davis Institute report found over 70 percent of respondents value diverse characters in games.
