Kenya's Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) conducted targeted operations on December 30, 2025, leading to the arrest of two traffic police officers in separate locations. In Murang’a, Constable Kelvin Mwangi from the Murang’a Traffic Station was apprehended on the busy Kenol–Murang’a road following surveillance prompted by multiple public complaints about bribe demands. A search uncovered Sh6,450 in Sh50, Sh100, and Sh200 notes, believed to have been collected within two hours. Another constable fled the scene.
The suspect was taken to EACC's Central Region offices for legal procedures before being transferred to Nyeri Police Station, where he was released on a Sh10,000 cash bail pending further investigation. In a related raid near Bekam on the Kerugoya–Kutus road, EACC officers stormed a suspected bribe collection point, but traffic police escaped into nearby bushes, abandoning their uniforms.
On the coast, Corporal Haroun Mazera Chamutu from Mtwapa Traffic Station was arrested for soliciting bribes from drivers on the main Mombasa–Malindi highway. He was found with Sh13,750 in various denominations and transported to EACC offices in Malindi to record a statement and undergo additional scrutiny.
The EACC described these operations as part of its ongoing national drive to curb corruption on major roads, particularly during the festive season. “EACC continues to strengthen intelligence gathering and surveillance in critical public services and sectors vulnerable to corruption, aiming to promote integrity, accountability, and professionalism in public service,” the commission stated. It urged citizens to report bribe incidents through official channels.
