Eko DisCo launches second phase of free prepaid meter rollout

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company has begun the second phase of its free prepaid meter installation program in Lagos and parts of Ogun State. The initiative aims to eliminate estimated billing and protect customers from fraud. Officials emphasize that no fees are required for the service.

At a town hall meeting in the Ajah District of Lagos on November 8, 2025, Eko DisCo's Chief Commercial Officer, Sam Edoho, announced the launch of the second phase of the company's free prepaid meter rollout. Representing Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mrs. Rekhiat Momoh, Edoho stated that the program, running until December 31, 2025, is funded through the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) and the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP). This effort seeks to close the metering gap, enhance billing accuracy, and promote transparency across the franchise areas.

Edoho highlighted that over 15,000 customers benefited from the first phase. The new phase will prioritize Band A and B customers before extending to Bands C, D, and E. "The free meters are here again. All customers need to do is apply—no payment, no installation fee, no processing fee," he said. Applications must be submitted via the official metering portal to verify customer data and assign meters appropriately.

The company issued strong warnings against fraudsters posing as facilitators. "Do not pay anybody. There is nothing like a registration fee, installation fee, or processing fee," Edoho cautioned, urging customers to report suspicious demands through whistleblower channels. While third-party vendors are authorized for installations, no payments are required from customers, as costs are covered by regulatory processes. Premises should be prepared with visible external walls for mounting.

Edoho also addressed challenges like meter bypassing and energy theft, which hinder stable power supply, and warned of potential disconnections for violators. To improve service, customer support will be available at key Ajah locations and via WhatsApp.

Community leader Mr. Ifeanyichukwu Oluoha praised the engagement: "This town hall proves that Eko DisCo listens." He pledged community support to protect infrastructure and raise awareness about the program. Eko DisCo reaffirmed its commitment to efficient electricity services in Lagos and Ogun State through stakeholder collaboration.
