Europeans sidelined in Ukraine talks as Trump pushes peace plan

Donald Trump stated on Sunday there are 'good chances' for a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, following talks in Florida between US officials and a Ukrainian delegation. Europeans feel sidelined in the process, not initially informed of the US 28-point plan favorable to Moscow. These discussions occur amid military and political pressure in Kyiv.

Nearly four years after the Ukraine war began in February 2022, Europeans are increasingly sidelined in diplomatic efforts. At the conflict's start, leaders like Emmanuel Macron made repeated calls to Vladimir Poutine and Volodymyr Zelensky, while the UK and Italy drew closer to Kyiv. Today, they were not consulted on the 'Miami plan,' a 28-point Russo-American proposal offering concessions to Russia, nor invited to Geneva talks on November 23 between Americans and Ukrainians. Europeans rushed to Switzerland urgently to amend the text.

On Sunday, November 30, 2025, a meeting took place in Florida between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, and the Ukrainian delegation led by Roustem Oumerov. The talks, described as 'productive' by Rubio and Oumerov, focus on amendments to the US plan negotiated in Geneva the previous week. Rubio noted that 'the situation is complex' and Russian exchanges are needed, while a Ukrainian source said the negotiations are 'not easy' but constructive, aiming to finalize points for follow-up in Moscow.

Trump, aboard Air Force One, judged there are 'good chances' for an agreement, stating that 'Russia would like it to end' and Ukraine wants it too. He criticized a corruption scandal in Ukraine, leading to the dismissal on Friday of Andriy Yermak, Zelensky's right-hand man, involved in an energy sector probe. Witkoff will travel to Moscow on Monday. Meanwhile, Macron will receive Zelensky in Paris on Monday to discuss a 'just and lasting peace,' security guarantees, and the coalition of the willing.

On the military front, Russian forces advance in eastern Ukraine, and a Russian drone attack near Kyiv killed one and injured 11 in the night from Saturday to Sunday. Zelensky appointed Oksana Markarova as advisor for reconstruction, and Ukraine agreed with Norway on joint drone production starting in 2026.
