Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu drew loud boos from more than 36,000 fans at Fenway Park on Friday during the Boston Red Sox home opener against the San Diego Padres. The two Democrats took the field for a pregame ceremony, where the crowd made their disapproval clear. Video of the jeers spread rapidly online.
Healey and Wu appeared on the field alongside members of the 1986 Red Sox team, posing for photos before the game began. Fans responded with sustained boos, an reaction captured in videos that went viral. GOP gubernatorial candidate Brian Shortsleeve, at the ballpark, said, “Maura Healey and Michelle Wu just got booed very loudly. It was even louder in person!” Fellow candidates Mike Minogue and Mike Kennealy also commented, with Minogue stating, “Looks like fans want someone else up to bat,” and Kennealy posting, “Man, I love Red Sox Nation!” for the crowd's response. This marks a repeat for Wu, who faced similar boos at last year’s Red Sox home opener. Earlier this year, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill encountered boos at a New Jersey Devils game on February 26.
