An 18-year-old Georgia man pleaded guilty on Monday to charges stemming from an incident outside the U.S. Capitol in February. Carter Camacho of Smyrna admitted to illegal firearm possession and child pornography offenses. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 8.
Carter Camacho was arrested on Feb. 17 after surveillance video showed him running toward the west side of the Capitol with a loaded shotgun. He wore body armor and camouflage clothing at the time.
Prosecutors said Camacho told officers he intended to confront members of Congress and "scare them into speaking the truth." He complied when ordered to drop the weapon and did not enter the building.
Camacho pleaded guilty to illegal possession of a firearm on Capitol grounds and receipt or distribution of child pornography. The second charge arose from a search of his phone following the arrest.
U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta in Washington, D.C., is set to sentence Camacho on Dec. 8. Camacho has remained in jail since his arrest.
