Ghanaian soccer player Dominic Frimpong killed in team bus attack

Dominic Frimpong, a 20-year-old winger for Berekum Chelsea in Ghana's Premier League, died after armed robbers attacked the team's bus on Sunday. The incident occurred as the players returned from a match in Samreboi, southern Ghana. One other player was badly injured, and police reported another victim robbed of over $400.

Berekum Chelsea's bus came under fire from masked men wielding guns and assault rifles while driving back from a game against Samartex in Samreboi. The club described how the driver tried to reverse as the attackers opened fire, forcing players and staff to flee into nearby bushes for cover. Officials confirmed Frimpong, on loan from Aduana Stars FC since the start of the year, was killed in the attack. He had played 13 games and scored two goals for the club this season, according to local media reports. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) called the death a huge loss to the club and Ghanaian soccer. GFA president Kurt Edwin Simeon Okrakru described it as heartbreaking on social media, adding, 'May Dominic's soul rest in perfect peace.' The association announced plans to strengthen security for teams traveling to domestic matches. Police noted that 52-year-old George Owusu Afriyie was robbed of more than $400 during the assault. One player remains in hospital with serious injuries. Ghanaian sports journalist Muftawu Abdulai told BBC Sport Africa that fans are questioning the safety of league travel. 'If the lives of the people or the key architect of the game cannot be protected then it is not worth playing the game,' Abdulai said. This marks the second such attack on a Ghana Premier League bus, following an incident involving Legon Cities in 2023 with no injuries.
