Prime Video's God of War adaptation is recasting the lead role of Kratos after actor Ryan Hurst suffered a serious on-set injury in late June.
The decision follows careful consideration by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. Hurst, who had gained 40 pounds of muscle for the physically demanding part, tore his bicep during a stunt and requires surgery with a recovery period of four to six months.
Production paused immediately after the incident and remains on hiatus. Prep work is expected to begin in mid-August ahead of a mid-October restart that will include reshoots with the new actor.
The series was ordered in December 2022 and follows Kratos as he journeys through the Norse realm of Midgard with his son Atreus. Ronald D. Moore serves as showrunner. The status of child actor Callum Vinson, who plays Atreus, is still to be determined.
