Hong Kong chief pledges tenfold university town expansion

Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu announced plans to expand a proposed university town to 1,000 hectares. The move follows endorsement from Beijing official Xia Baolong during a recent visit.

Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said on Wednesday that the proposed university town would grow tenfold to 1,000 hectares. He spoke after meetings with Xia Baolong, director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office.

Xia endorsed linking education with industry and technology. Lee quoted Xia as saying the plan would allow campus, technology, industry and city zones to develop in tandem and drive the pooling of talent.

The university town forms part of the 30,000-hectare Northern Metropolis project near the border with mainland China. Lee said he would expedite the megaproject to spur economic growth.
