The Independent Policing Oversight Authority has launched investigations into alleged abductions, assaults and excessive force reported during protests marking the second anniversary of the Gen-Z demonstrations on June 25.
IPOA is examining claims from Nairobi and Mombasa where police erected barricades and used teargas and acoustic devices. Some officers wore balaclavas or operated in plain clothes while carrying firearms and using vehicles with concealed plates.
The authority has recorded statements from victims in Nairobi's central business district and provided psychosocial support. It is also monitoring fresh protests in Mathare, Huruma and Kariobangi North.
The June 25 protests led to 355 arrests nationwide with Nairobi recording 161 and at least seven people forcibly disappeared including activist Davis Lichuma.
