Get in the Van Productions will stage a contemporary adaptation of Jane Austen's 1815 novel Emma at Sungmisan Theater in Seoul with performances scheduled in July.
The production uses a 2022 script by American playwright Kate Hamill. Director Holly Lana Wright described the show as fourth wall breaking with a flair for the melodramatic.
Jessica Kwen stars as Emma Woodhouse alongside Sungsoo Chris Ha as George Knightley. The cast and crew incorporated deliberate anachronisms drawing from modern culture and Kwen's Korean American background.
Performances are set for July 4 and 11 at 6 p.m. and July 5 and 12 at 2 p.m. Tickets cost 25,000 won and the show is recommended for ages 14 and up.
Wright said the team aims for audiences to leave after getting a workout from laughing. The nonprofit company focuses on contemporary theatrical experiences centered on marginalized communities.
