KeNHA announces upgrade of Kyuso-Tseikuru road in Kitui

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced plans to upgrade the Kyuso-Tseikuru Road in Kitui County, which leads to the home of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka. The move follows a recent war of words between Kalonzo and President William Ruto over the road's poor condition. The project promises better access to government services for local residents.

On December 23, 2025, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) published a tender notice for the strengthening and upgrading of the Kyuso-Tseikuru Road to durable bitumen standards. This dusty and muddy route, long in disrepair, connects areas in Kitui County and leads to Tseikuru, the ancestral home of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

The KeNHA notice specifies that the project will be funded through development votes, with a mandatory pre-tender site visit scheduled at Kandwia shopping centre on January 15, 2026, at 10am. Interested contractors can obtain full tender documents from the KeNHA website or the Public Procurement Information Portal (PPIP).

While presented as part of the national infrastructure push, some Kenyans speculate the timing aims to sway Kalonzo toward President William Ruto's administration. This comes amid recent tensions, as on December 15, 2025, Ruto criticized Kalonzo's 40-year political career for failing to improve the road.

"I heard one of them say I’ve been laying roads, he said while in government. He even corrected me, saying he served for 40 years, not 50. My question is, how many years does he need to do a single project? Clearly, these issues are beyond his understanding," Ruto remarked. He added, "How do you campaign for development when the road to your own home is still dusty?"

Kalonzo countered by accusing the president of fixating on him instead of broader infrastructure efforts. He highlighted overseeing significant projects in Kitui and beyond during his public service tenure.

The upgrade will ease access to healthcare, schools, and markets for Kitui residents, addressing longstanding challenges in the region.
