Kingston High's indoor track and field team delivered medals and personal records at the Steve Borbet Invitational in New York City on January 16. Junior Hazel Lewis highlighted the performance with a runner-up finish in the 800-meter run. The Tigers showed depth across events as multiple athletes achieved personal bests.
The Kingston High indoor track and field team competed at the Steve Borbet Invitational at the Nike Track and Field Center at The Armory in New York City on Friday, January 16. The athletes piled up medals and set personal records in a standout showing.
Junior Hazel Lewis led the way, finishing second in the girls' 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 20.12 seconds. This mark was just 0.04 seconds off her school record of 2:12.08 and ranks her among the top three in New York state for scholastic girls, as well as in the top 100 nationally.
Junior Charlotte McFarland opened the evening with a fifth-place finish in the full mile, clocking 5:16.04—a seven-second personal record and the second-best time all-time for Kingston girls. Her performance places her in the top 25 in New York.
On the boys' side, junior Marcode Campbell took fourth in the 200-meter race with a personal-record 22.92 seconds, third-best all-time at Kingston and 32nd in the state. Sophomore Kai'Lynn Hagen earned fourth in the girls' 200 with a personal best of 26.44 seconds, improving on her previous 27.43.
Sophomore Julian Etuk cleared 20 feet, 0.5 inches in the boys' long jump for his first time beyond 20 feet, a three-inch personal best. Senior Richard Sullivan reached 10th in the shot put with 40 feet, 9 1/4 inches—his first throw over 40 feet.
Additional personal records came from girls including Hagen, Kylee Dziomba, Stella Spiro (all 55 meters), Maeve Paul, Madeline Sykes (600 meters), and Macie Hurley (mile). Boys' personal bests included Maddix Williams (55 meters, 200 meters), Ethan Pitt (55 meters, triple jump), Ruben Derisse (300 meters), Ryan Hasbrouck (600 meters), Redi Felton (800 meters), Caleb Storenski (1,000 meters), Jackson Beesmer (mile), and Chase Petrie (shot put).
Kingston coach Joe Cahill noted that Lewis, McFarland, Campbell, and Hagen will aim to break school records later in the season. The teams next head to the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 1 Championships at West Point on January 23.
