Swiss player Leandro Riedi confronted spectators and the chair umpire during his French Open qualifying match against Pierre-Hugues Herbert on May 22. The incident occurred on Court Suzanne Lenglen as the home crowd cheered loudly for the Frenchman.
Riedi approached the umpire in the third set while Herbert led 3-1. He complained about the constant noise, saying, “That’s provoking properly, you are not saying anything… what are you doing?” He later added that he could speak French and questioned a remark from a spectator. After the exchange, Riedi hit an ace and responded with sarcastic flying kisses toward the stands. Herbert won the match 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-3. The 35-year-old Frenchman described the atmosphere as incredible and noted it was special to compete in front of a full crowd at Roland-Garros. He also mentioned his brief past coaching connection with Riedi and hugged his son after the victory.
