Firefighters have stabilized the Les Gavarres fire in Girona and lifted confinements in eight municipalities. Eight homes were completely destroyed and eight others suffered partial damage.
The fire declared 48 hours ago near La Bisbal has burned about 2,400 hectares. Joan Rovira, head of Firefighter Intervention, explained that the perimeter remains irregular with secondary hotspots and that the right flank remains the main concern due to its proximity to 30,000 hectares of forest.
Confinements have been lifted after a night of work to secure the perimeter. Rovira asked citizens to avoid “fire tourism” and limit movement in the area to allow emergency services to work.
The suspected arsonist, a worker detained on Friday while using a radial tool, has been released after court proceedings. He remains under investigation for forest fire and must appear before the judge when summoned. A damage inspection will take place on Sunday.
