Following its SXSW premiere, Lionsgate has scheduled John Carney's 'Power Ballad'—starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas—for a limited release on May 29 ahead of a wide release on June 5. The film holds a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score, and a new trailer has been released.
The movie, which follows a wedding singer (Paul Rudd) and fading boy-band star (Nick Jonas) bonding over music amid rivalry over a hit song, was co-written by director John Carney and Peter McDonald. 30West fully financed the project, with producers Anthony Bregman, Carney, Peter Cron, Rebecca O’Flanagan, and Robert Walpole. Additional cast includes Peter McDonald, Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu, and Jack Reynor. It will compete with Amazon MGM’s Masters of the Universe and Warner Bros./Legendary’s Animal Friends. Deadline critic Glenn Garner called it a potential 'feel-good movie for a date night or comfort watch for artists.' The trailer was shared by Rotten Tomatoes.
