On July 21, 2024, around 11:30 a.m., Cpl. Mohamed Said, 26, approached two individuals, including Lopez, near a car wash in Melvindale while on patrol. Melvindale Police Chief Robert Kennaley said Lopez fled, leading to a confrontation in a nearby neighborhood where the officer was fatally shot. Authorities reported Lopez escaped on a bicycle before a tip led to his arrest in southwest Detroit; he smiled and winked at cameras during custody.
