Metallica performed covers of The Proclaimers’ ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)’ in Glasgow and The Pogues’ ‘Dirty Old Town’ in Dublin during their M72 World Tour this week.
The band played Glasgow’s Hampden Park on June 25. Guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo used their mid-set ‘Kirk and Rob Doodle’ section to play Nazareth’s ‘Hair of the Dog’ followed by the Proclaimers track.
Four days earlier on June 21 at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium, the duo performed Ewan MacColl’s ‘Dirty Old Town’, a song long associated with Irish music through versions by The Dubliners and The Pogues.
The ‘Kirk and Rob Doodle’ segment regularly features tributes to local acts during the tour. Metallica released ‘Reload (Remastered)’ on June 26 and continue the UK and European leg with a show scheduled for Cardiff on June 28.
