The New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 8-1 on Sunday afternoon at Citi Field. A first-inning throwing error by Mike Yastrzemski that struck a protective netting pole allowed an extra run to score during a four-run rally.
Yastrzemski's throw from the left-field corner hit a stanchion supporting the netting down the left-field line. The ball bounced back into fair territory and remained live, enabling Jared Young to score New York's third run of the inning.
Braves manager Walt Weiss described the play as a one-in-a-million shot. "One-in-a-million shot that it hits that pole," he said. "You get tucked in that corner there and it’s a tough angle coming out of there."
The Mets added back-to-back home runs from A.J. Ewing and Marcus Semien in the fifth inning. Four relievers, including A.J. Minter and Huascar Brazobán, then combined to shut down the Braves over the final innings.
