Lecturers at Moi University have warned of a possible strike in September unless KSh1.2 billion in salary arrears is paid. The Universities Academic Staff Union claims the funds were misallocated. Union leaders are urging resolution before students return.
The Universities Academic Staff Union says the KSh1.2 billion allocation for arrears from 2017 to 2022 was used instead to settle older obligations from 2013 to 2017. Union Secretary General Constantine Wasonga and official Robert Oduori have called for the money to be released immediately to cover KSh500 million in pending payments.
Wasonga stated that the funds must be used to pay the arrears and asked that issues be settled before students return in September. The union noted that the university administration has acknowledged the availability of the funds.
Robert Oduori warned that failure to resolve the matter could force the union to take industrial action when universities reopen. The dispute raises concerns about financial accountability and risks broader disruption across public universities.
