Montpellier secured a 23-21 victory over Union Bordeaux-Bègles (UBB) on Saturday evening in Top 14 at Stade Chaban-Delmas. Domingo Miotti delivered the winning penalty in the final minute. Yacouba Camara starred for the visitors in the tight contest.
Montpellier Hérault Rugby (MHR) defeated Union Bordeaux-Bègles (UBB) 23-21 in Top 14’s 20th round on Saturday, April 25, at Stade Chaban-Delmas in Bordeaux. Despite a shaky first half, the visitors turned the game around after halftime.
Domingo Miotti, following early misses like a failed diagonal kick and direct touch, emerged as the hero with the match-winning penalty at the 80th minute amid crowd boos. Yacouba Camara, French international flanker with 17 caps, made 9 tackles, stole two lineouts, and scored a try at the hour mark to bring his side back into contention.
Montpellier had not won in Bordeaux since September 4, 2016. Under manager Joan Caudullo, the club displays impressive late-season form, strong in basics.
UBB squandered a crucial chance in the qualification race, remaining fifth level on points with Racing 92 and five points behind co-second-placed Pau and Montpellier with four rounds left. Bordeaux’s attack, led by Damian Penaud, Romain Buros, and Louis Bielle-Biarrey, saw little ball against a solid Montpellier defense.
Five minutes from time, with Montpellier down to 13 after yellows to Vunipola and Diaby, UBB took the lead via Lamothe’s in-goal, but Maxime Lucu missed the conversion. Restart errors by Cyril Woki and Jefferson Poirot handed Miotti the chance to clinch the win.
