The National Conference removed Dr. Mohammad Jaffer Akhoon from party membership on July 18, 2026, after he refused to step down as Chief Executive Councillor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil.
An NC spokesman said party general secretary Haji Ali Mohammad Sagar expelled Mr. Akhoon from basic membership for six years. The action was taken due to anti-party activities and indiscipline.
The NC and Congress had contested the 2023 hill council elections together under a pre-poll agreement. The parties were to share the CEC post on a rotational basis for two-and-a-half years each. Mr. Akhoon refused to resign despite Congress attempts to bring a no-confidence motion.
Ladakh Member of Parliament Hanifa Jan met Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena to ensure a floor test as per the rules. The council has 30 members including four nominated seats.
